A New Format
From 1 September 2001, number plates took on a new format. The old age identifier prefix letters ran out. Vehicles registered as new from 1 September 2001 have number plates that include

  • a two letter regional identifier

  • a two figure age identifier

  • three random letters

The new format make number plates easier to read and make them more memorable.

A New Font Style
A new number plate font style was introduced in 2001. This makes it illegal for any vehicle being used on the public highway to have a number plate that does not conform to the new style. Motorists whose vehicles bear number plates, which have been customised by means of stylised letters and figures such as italics, or the placement of number plate fixing bolts must replace them or risk prosecution.

The new mandatory font style is based on the 'Charles Wright' font as shown below:

The overall width of characters have been reduced from 57mm to 50mm.

GB Euro symbol
From 1 March 2001, motorists have been able if they wish, to incorporate the GB Euro symbol onto their numberplates. The display of other emblems on numberplates is now prohibited. If desired they may be displayed, as before, on other parts of the vehicle.

Some Questions & Answers

Q: I already have a personalised number. Will it still be valid after the introduction of the new style registration?
A: Yes and you may sell and transfer it in exactly the same way as you would now. You must though comply with cherished transfer rules, which pertain at the time.
Q: Will I be able to assign and or transfer any of the registrations listed on this Internet site to vehicles first registered as new on or after 1 September 2001?
A: Yes provided you comply with the rules governing the assignment and transfer of vehicle registration numbers.
Q: I already have a registration, which is properly represented on a numberplate. Will I have to change it in 2001?
A: No. Provided it is properly represented there is no need to change it. However if it needs to be replaced because of damage etc, or the registration is being displayed using unusual lettering, it will need to be replaced once the new regulations are in place to reflect the new style font.

The Agency's Sale of Marks scheme continues selling personalised registration numbers under the current and new format at auction and through our telesales business.
